New Year has just arrived, 2017!
We still can feel the cold of winter, the last taste from New Year Eve’s dinner, and one of the most expected gifts for the little ones (and not so little) are the newest technological additions for video gaming. The gamer community has been steadily increasing throughout the years. The golden age of video gaming was back in the 90’s, after the 70’s and 80’s gave us all a whole new way for entertainment. This brief review from 90’s video gaming is going to bring us back in time to the very roots of many of the today’s better games.
What about 90’s video gaming?
A classic one from many of lifelong gamers’ childhood is Street Fighter II, released in 1991, this fight game developed the most accurate joystick and button scanning routine in the genre thus far. This permitted players to consistently execute multi-button special moves, which had previously required an element of luck. The game was also very successful because of its graphics, with highly detailed characters and increasingly harder stages. Street Fighter II allowed players to play against head to head with friends, and the reputation of Street Fighter II surprised the gaming industry with its fun and entertaining interactive abilities.
Another revolutionary fact in 90’s video gaming, was the marketing of first-person shooter (FPS) games. This type of game usually features the player as the protagonist. Most often the player does not see the face of the character they are playing, but will always see the weapon of choice located in the player’s hand, as if they themselves were in the game. These are usually violent and feature blood and gore, which has released controversy from parent groups. It is important to be aware of that fact before playing these games; they are not for everyone, because of their sometimes explicit content with virtual blood, mature language, and themes. Wolfenstein 3d, from 1992, Doom from 1993 are also good examples of the start of this genre of games, but the next evolutionary step in the genre was taken by Quake II (1997), Unreal (1998) and Half-Life (1998) for their continual progression of the game intensity and visual graphics improving as each new game boasted sharper images, better weapons control, and so on (but no actual levels in the traditional sense to overcome like the Mario franchise, which was a 2d side scrolling story-line game) and an entirely in-person view, and has become one of the most popular video game genres in history.
A lot of time has passed by since the very first tests for gaming entertainment, and a lot more is left to see for the gaming community. It’s important to look back at the past to value the development and quality of graphic designs, every time more and more challenging for the new eras to arrive and for the arising demands of the gamers.
