Synopsis: In a land where three suns almost never set, a fledgling killer joins a school of assassins, seeking vengeance against the powers who destroyed her family.

Daughter of an executed traitor, Mia Corvere is barely able to escape her father’s failed rebellion with her life. Alone and friendless, she hides in a city built from the bones of a dead god, hunted by the Senate and her father’s former comrades. But her gift for speaking with the shadows leads her to the door of a retired killer, and a future she never imagined.

Now, Mia is apprenticed to the deadliest flock of assassins in the entire Republic—the Red Church. If she bests her fellow students in contests of steel, poison and the subtle arts, she’ll be inducted among the Blades of the Lady of Blessed Murder, and one step closer to the vengeance she desires. But a killer is loose within the Church’s halls, the bloody secrets of Mia’s past return to haunt her, and a plot to bring down the entire congregation is unfolding in the shadows she so loves.

Will she even survive to initiation, let alone have her revenge?

Final Thoughts:  I had originally bought this book because of the first page, more specific, the first sentence. I’m not usually one to read high fantasy, but something about this book caught my attention. I was hesitant to read it, because once it released there were amazing reviews floating around, I was skeptical on whether or not it could live up to all the hype. It was extremely hard to get into, the first couple of chapters were flash backs, and it was a new kind of way to read. It includes little excerpts at the bottom of some pages, that explain a specific idea in that moment. Once I got the hang of it though, boy was I in for a ride.
This book has a bit of everything, it’s not slow paced, it kept my attention once I got passed the first couple of chapters, and it just flowed. I haven’t read a book that I have enjoyed this much in a very long time. There are f-bombs, c-bombs and much more, there are gruesome murders, and twists here and there that I was not expecting.
Imagine the feel of Dune, mixed with adult version of Hogwarts + Assassins in training, along with a shadow cat, and a girl who can bend shadows. I could not put this book down. Jay Kristoff did an amazing job at creating an assassin you come to love.
I won’t give spoilers; however the way it ended, left me with more questions, but good ones. It made me hungry for the next part of the series, which I hear is being released sometime in 2017. I personally can’t wait for the next chapter of this trilogy, and I’ve found my new favourite book. This is a definite read for me!

5 stars on this one.
