Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?”

Perhaps you want to know what Mindy thinks makes a great best friend (someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night), or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in any room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous you can never get convicted of murder in a court of law), or how to maintain a trim figure (you will not find that information in these pages). If so, you’ve come to the right book, mostly!

In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Mindy invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood, with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls. Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door—not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka.

Final Thoughts:

I’m sure most of you have seen The Mindy Project… or The Office. Both are a couple of my favourite shows to watch when I need a light hearted comedy that will make me laugh countless times. These two shows are what introduced me to Mindy Kaling. She played Kelly Kapore in The Office and appropriately Mindy in The Mindy Project. She’s quirky and full of fun, so naturally I was intrigued when I found out that she has a couple of books she had wrote. It’s a short read, but WORTH it! I normally don’t like reading these types of books. However Mindy pleasantly surprised me. This book is hilarious, and light. It is a book you read when you have had a crappy day/ shift and want something to make you smile. I continuously cracked up while reading IS EVERYONE HANGING OUT WITHOUT ME? ( And Other Concerns ). I could not put this book down. Mindy wrote this book in a way that makes you feel like you’re sitting down with her over Starbucks, or Tim Hortons or whatever hot beverage place you enjoy, and sharing little bits that best friends share. She seems so down to earth, and hilarious. It’s filled with funny stories and pictures from her childhood to how she got where she is now, and all the struggles/ lessons life has thrown at her.

Her page dedicated to “Married People” ” I want to hear that you guys watch every episode of The Bachelorette together in secret shame, or that one got the other hooked on Breaking Bad and if either watches it without the other, they’re dead meat.”

Yup, I can totally relate to that, my husband and I are pals in Mindy’s words.

“After all these years with friends who are five ten or taller, I have come to carry myself with the confidence of a tall person. It’s all in the head. It works out.” This quote made me chuckle a little inside…. how many of us short women have thought about this in our heads..? I bet quite a few of us 😉

I definitely recommend this book if you want a good, light hearted quick read. One that is a page turner and will make you literally Laugh Out Loud.

*note: sometimes the book seems more like a huge blog post, due to the casualness her tone.* ( only complaint )

It was a breath of fresh air, and a nice break from the normal genre of books I tend to read. Great job Mindy, and I look forward to starting the next book when I’m having a bad day. Just for a couple of laughs.

Happy Reading!
