Day 22 of the new challenge from Books and Cupcakes where we will be focusing on children’s books! Today’s book is the children’s classic, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis. After being evacuated from WWII London, Lucy Pevensie discovers a wardrobe in a spare room that allows transport to the mystical kingdom of Narnia. Lucy, along with her siblings Edmund, Susan, and Peter, embarks on an adventure to save the world from the White Witch and restore the kingdom to the good creatures of Narnia.

Depending on your publication, this is either book 1 or book 2 of the series. The current publisher uses The Magician’s Nephew as book 1 of the series, although it was published later in time. The Magician’s Nephew essentially tells the story of how Narnia was created, how the White Witch came to exist there, and how a wardrobe became a conduit for travel between Earth and Narnia. It’s certainly not necessary reading for understanding the better-known TLWW, but readers may find it illuminating, and I personally found it to be an entertaining starting point. Still, if you’re going to read just one book in the series, TLWW is really where you want to go.
