Books and Cupcakes  Book Photo Challenge! We are focusing on Children’s books this month, and this was probably one of the most influential books I read as a kid.

Island of the Blue Dolphins, by Scott O’Dell

The topic today is Fav Character Name. The protagonist of this story is name Karana. I loved her name so much that when my goal in life was to be kidnapped by Native Americans and live in a tribe (circa. 2nd grade), I decided Karana would be my ‘Indian Name”.  When her tribe evacuated the island, Karana stayed behind as her brother was stranded on the shores. She loses him soon after and finds herself alone. She’s a strong girl who fights for survival against weather, dogs, and starvation. She explores her island, finds ways to get food, and fends for herself against wild dogs, waiting for salvation.

Amazon recommends it for 8+, but it is a quality story for all ages. I really want to go re-read it now and I suggest you do the same!

Hello everyone! I'm a 30-year old Middle School science teacher, which gets all kinds of reactions. When I'm not teaching, I'm either writing, playing video games, practicing violin, drawing, or reading. I've spent many hours hiking in the woods and have been known to stargaze. I live in Maryland with my awesome, supportive, and loving husband and although we don't have kids yet, my 100+ students keep me busy.
