Back to the Gym

I finished my first workout at the MUA gym about an hour and a half ago. It was shorter than I will be doing from here on, but let’s face it; I haven’t spent time in a gym since my last visit to Crunch Fitness in Staten Island way back on February 9th. I figured 45 minutes in the gym was a decent sweat equity deposit.

Popped on my music, and Fugees version of “Killing Me Softly” started. We played, you cheeky iPod. Well played in every way possible. I finished my workout (why does this world have SQUATS??!!??!) with Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar On Me” – touché you lil creepy mean machine, reminding me why I’m in here in the first place, and setting me up for a good dose of “end the gym session” guilt.

There’s a lovely lady, one of the other professor’s wives, and we get to chatting; she’s Canadian as well, and was in the same city as me (near Toronto, Ontario) [back in April, before Kaylee and I arrived here], at the same time. We had a good chuckle about that, and I have a feeling there will be many more shared smiles and laughs as we grow in our budding friendship.

I returned my key to the library – that’s how things run here, nice and neat and tidy and sign in, sign out, have a nice day kind of thing. I like and appreciate that a lot. Rules and routines are safe, and they are best when they are adhered to. I like that we (staff/profs and their spouses) have a set time to use the gym [and it’s in the morning!] where I don’t have to compete with 20-somethings who are only burning off last night’s beer pong festivities (I have to assume that’s happening on this tiny island, right?), whereas I’m … not. I like being able to plug in the earbuds and lose the world behind me. It’s just me and the treadmill, or the free weights, or well; you get the idea. I feel like Mikey (Sean Astin) in Goonies, when he’s defending their need to move on with the goal to see the pirate ship and meet One-Eyed Willy. {to paraphrase} “It’s MY time in the gym, it’s MY TIME!”
