OK, I may date myself here, but raise your hand if you remember Yahoo’s Chat Rooms? Let’s go back 10, hell maybe even 15 years ago. Somehow, I stumbled across Yahoo chat rooms, and landed myself in a chat room named “Billys” Tavern (Actual name not remembered, other than Tavern). I was in high school, and I had no clue what journey I was about to embark on.
I was extremely confused at first, and I only lurked for a while, reading the interactions between each user. I pieced together that these people were in character, and some of them knew each other, and some of them didn’t. Searching the internet, I discovered the term “Role Playing.”
What was so great about yahoo at that time, was your ability to customize your profile. You could add pictures, bios, back story, anything. It was amazing. I came across some very well written stories, and it fascinated me. You could also have more than one name to a single account – I think I had maybe 7 or 8 different characters at most one time.
I started small. I role played as a wolf cub. Super basic, not much detail at first. I don’t remember much about that, but I moved from wolf cubs to role playing as Kairi from Kingdom Hearts, at that time there were so many chat rooms dedicated to Kingdom Hearts. Plus, I didn’t need to have a back story for Kairi. This is where I met my first online boyfriend. He of course, played Sora, and naturally we role played a lot together, especially on a non-sexual romantic level. But, like many future relationships I got into online, he stopped logging in and that was the end of that. I want to explain, that at this time I did zero erotic role playing, but when you act as a character, for me anyway, it was hard to separate my true feelings with the role play feelings.
Not only were my characters becoming more developed, my writing style was too. I started off with simple script style of role playing:
*Kairi fiddled with her hair, sighed, and finally spoke* “I don’t think we should do that.”
To more paragraph styled role playing:
Kairi studied Sora’s expression as he was explaining the plan to leave Destiny Island. He looked so calm, so sure of himself. ‘I wish I could feel like that more’ Kairi thought to herself. The wind started blowing soft and warm, reinforcing her desire to stay on the island. The sun pressed itself against Kairi’s cheeks, and for a moment she forgot she was supposed to be listening to Sora’s plan. She breathed in the sea air, and smiled to herself. She’s going to miss this place, so much.
Oddly enough, when I was going through high school, my creative writing assignments were fantastic. My typing skills improved dramatically, and it didn’t take me long to type up papers. I’m not sure I would have the typing abilities I have today if it wasn’t for Role Playing, as I was glued to the computer at a time that AOL and dial up ruled the internet (Yes, dating myself here yet again!).
Eventually, I began saving paragraphs for my intro’s to Yahoo’s chat rooms and waited in the Taverns for other advanced RPers. My most intricate role play of all, a female elf named Elle, involved a number of people, and I even dabbled with fighting type role play. Sadly, I have forgotten most of the fighting type role play as that wasn’t my passion. I went to great lengths to develop her, even learning some basic Elvish to converse with.
amin mele role playien vee’ an edhel.
Over time, I got sucked into the gaming world, and logged on less and less, and stopped all together once Yahoo removed their profile customization and eventually their chat rooms all together.
I still have the urge to role play often, sometimes you just need to let your creative juices flow, as someone else, in a fantasy world far far away.
