Oryx and Crake is at once an unforgettable love story and a compelling vision of the future. Snowman, known as Jimmy before mankind was overwhelmed by a plague, is struggling to survive in a world where he may be the last human, and mourning the loss of his best friend, Crake, and the beautiful and elusive Oryx whom they both loved. In search of answers, Snowman embarks on a journey–with the help of the green-eyed Children of Crake–through the lush wilderness that was so recently a great city, until powerful corporations took mankind on an uncontrolled genetic engineering ride. Margaret Atwood projects us into a near future that is both all too familiar and beyond our imagining.

Final Thoughts:

I had originally read this book for a class in College…. I quickly fell in love with it.This book was a fast read for me. It is extremely interesting, ( for me) following Jimmy ( Snowman ) around, and learning about the Children of Crake ( who are fairly odd and somewhat alien like. ) . I tend to love end of the world stuff, and this fits perfectly. Atwood made me want to read more. Jimmy is someone you could relate to as a  character, and he makes you wish you knew Oryx and Crake.  The whole book made me feel as if I was on the journey with Snowman. It’s a  page turner, what with wondering if Jimmy will reveal how the great biological disaster was released, and the constant wondering if  Snowman would survive starvation, injury, and attack by mutant monster pigs, as well.

This is one of my favourite books. I’m currently on the third one in the series and am looking forward to knowing what happens. The best thing about this book, was it kept me asking ” what next?”

Great read! I suggest to anyone who likes end of the world type stories.

Happy Reading!
