Day 25 of the new challenge from Books and Cupcakes where we will be focusing on children’s books! I couldn’t pick Christmas Day and not have a book about Christmas! Today’s book is a bit retro and hard-to-find now. In fact, I didn’t realize how retro it was until I read it again to my daughter last week for the first time since I was a kid. It’s really, um… groovy. Anyway, it’s called Countdown to Christmas, by Bill Peet.
In this story, Santa becomes disenchanted with the old traditions. According to the book, he’s sort of a “Mod” Santa (link included for all you 80’s-and-later babies like me who have no idea what this means — see? you learned something today!) He replaces his trusty sack for a new one made of synthetic fiber, paints his old red sleigh in tie-dye rainbow chic, and even contemplates sending off his reindeer in favor of jet engines.
As with many things in life, Santa quickly realizes that the new ways aren’t always better ways, and he sets about trying to undo all of his mistakes in time for Christmas presents to be delivered.
It really is an entertaining story, sprinkled with bits of humor and plenty of colorful illustrations, and it’s written in rhyme that rolls off the tongue for easy reading to young children. Give it a shot if you can find it! Or, let me know if you’re really interested to read it and I’ll scan the pages. I mean, no, I would never do that, copyright police. Wink. That wink could mean anything. Circumstantial.
Merry Christmas, and happy holidays, everyone!
