Stranger Things Chapter 8 Review (and Series Wrap Report)

Chapter 8: The Upside Down

/snark I LOOOOOOOOOVE when the “good guy” lays that “I sent this to the ***” claim of exposure to the bad guys. Can we please stop doing this? It’s as bad as the bad guy revealing his major plot pieces right before the good guy is able to escape and then knows how to disable the codes/whatever. To me, this is a lazy time filler. (tiny rant completed, I swear, I will behave for the next two minutes at least.)

Have you wondered if Brenner works for Connie or if she’s contracted to work for him? It would be interesting to know which one is the boss in that dynamic.

That was kind of nice twist about Nancy’s boyfriend. Well played, Duffer Bros. It’s a touch on the smarmy side, but given that it’s possibly not (Come on Netflix, pick up series #2 already!!!) going to be renewed (TRAVESTY on almost a Firefly scale if that happens), it stands to reason that they try to tie up all the loose ends as best possible, just in case.

It has to be frustrating to have a series you want to be a continuing thing, but aren’t sure, and because of that, have to cheapen out the endings that you would have otherwise not “hollywooded” and made all fluffy, just for sake of wrapping things up tidy with that little Christmas bow.

They are the geeky AV nerds. I would have hid in the least possible thought of spot: stereotypically speaking, that would have been the drama room, the metal/wood/car shop, or somewhere else like that – sometimes the writers forget these are the smart kids…

One note for you if you haven’t watched this episode yet: Be prepared of the flashing lights. They are annoying to ME, so if you have problems with lights pulsing, be prepared, it’s about 15 seconds worth of eye-bother.

Spoilers:

*continuity issues first*

Eggs. Of course there are eggs. It wouldn’t be Godzilla 1998 if… oh, wait, it’s NOT Godzilla 1998.

CPR doesn’t {usually] work. It honestly breaks the sternum, the ribs, and rarely does the person get enough oxygen back into their lungs to breathe on their own from that method only.

Hop, what did you agree to??!?!?!!?

Hop, why are you feeding the forest EGGOS!?!?!?!?! 😀 Is … 011/Jane alive still?!

Mrs Wheeler, you are a giant raging festering bovine. I do not like how phony you are, and you’re nothing more than a glorified remnant of what you could have been if you hadn’t sold out so desperately to become what you are: a vacuous shell of a human. Your daughter has been missing all day long as well, and do you even think to ask about Nancy? NO! Just Mike. You don’t deserve ANY of your children, and how you ended up with Mike, who is quite literally the opposite of everything fake and pretentious that you are, is beyond me.

I’m not even sorry for saying it. I’m glad I finally got that off my chest. She’s a cow.

Will, whatcha coughin’ up there, buddy? Is that the first? The last? Is this going to turn into pod-people? Are you a carrier now?

Final thoughts on the series:

Do I want season two? Yup. While you’re at it, please get on Firefly Series 2 and erase everyone’s mind of Serenity. NO LEAVES ON THE WIND… sorry, had to get that in there.

One of the main focuses apparently for Series 2 is going to be “justice for Barb”. As if she’d be shoved aside so easily. Wow, Mrs. Holland, really? Not even one phone call to the cops? I don’t understand why they dropped the ball on this one.

Why wasn’t Benny’s suicide changed into a murder? Swiss cheese has less holes.

Is Dr. Brenner still alive? It would be kind of sad that he’s been this prominent and focal and then !BOOM! dies off camera? Nah, I don’t see that happening.

Where is 011? Why did Hopper leave the eggos in the woods? Is she… did she have to take over the Upside Down? Is she some how the guardian there now? Will she have to fight Will?

How long had the Lab been tracking Will? (remember my questions from Chapter 4? Yeah, they are extensive.)
-birthmark: seriously, what the hell? that was so glibly washed over, I was actually angry that she asked and it cut the scene. I want to see it! I want to know what is going on. Why didn’t she get to hold his body? Why was it behind glass? Sorry, I don’t believe this would be her reaction, and I can’t see her not forcing them to be 100% sure she was right deep down.
-did the monster get to him or did the lab give him to the monster? I mean, if the monster got him, it would have stood to reason he cut himself to call the monster, as it’s pointed out that is how it tracked people.
-why wasn’t the dog taken/killed/silenced? For that matter, why have a dog at all if you’re not going to have him participate in the show? Why not at least freakin’ feed him once or…IDK… NAME HIM!?! >.< I dislike animals used as emotional pulls for no reason.

I really hope that Netflix signs for Series #2 soon, before the actors playing the boys get too old to reprise their roles while they are young. DO IT, Netflix. *peer pressure* DO IT.

Hopper’s attachment to bringing home Will could be, as I said earlier in #7’s review, because he is Will’s bio-papa, or it could be because he knows the absolute pain of losing a child so much, and can see Joyce, someone he obviously still cares about to some degree at least, on the precipice of falling past the pit of despair, into a void that she could never come up from. I think it could be both to be honest, but I guess we’ll have to see if that plays out.

I want Hopper to find Jane/011 and through some plot line, end up with her as his kid. I can see that being an epic father/daughter duo.

One last little part to think about: The empty eggshell and the tiny slug-parasite that Will coughed up. Which is which? The egg was too large to host a slug that size, and the slug was residing inside of Will because of the alien-tube-thingy was in his throat. Maybe that’s a sperm? And the egg (which is larger in female humans for example in comparison to a sperm) ….. you see where I’m going with this. If that sperm-slug-parasite thing is heading to the thing that came out of the egg and yet Will is now a host/carrier for the sperm-slug-parasite things, it stands to reason he could be the NEXT MONSTER, because he would have to evolve in order to keep feeding his crazy parasitic spermoid slug children.

Will and Jane/011 might have to become mortal enemies and fight in order to save humanity from being ripped apart (I might also be way past my brain capacity for today and might need to get some oxygen myself, so I could be reaching here, but it’s plausible), but I think something pretty significant will have to happen in order for the next series to shake things up the way this one has.

Granted IF they are going find Jane/011 and reunite her with her mama, that will possibly bring Terry Ives back into the situation, which will possibly have Brenner back to reissue tests to see how far gone she is and how significant the damage to her mind has been since she was tested and subjected to all those crazy lab experiments… That could become very Jacob’s Ladder, especially if they go back in time even earlier and start to show the other horrible things that have been recorded and hinted and alluded to over the decades about the testing that the CIA/NSA/blah blah blah and others have done. ((That wasn’t me being glib, but rather you fill in whichever one you know about, and let it stay blank so that those who are slightly more naive about the world can sleep at night.))

I’ll say this much, stranger things have piqued my interest, but not made me fall in love with characters so easily. Winona brings it. This is her love child, and I adore her even more for every ounce of MOMishness that she brought to this role. She wasn’t afraid to get raw and dirty and scared. She acted so well, I forgot she was acting, and I loved her and felt so sorry for her. I need to adopt 011 and keep her safe forever, but only if I can have the rest of the boys as well. Well, maybe not Will…

Until next time, enjoy your Netflix, and watch responsibly! Remember to rest and get plenty of fluids!!
