Chapter 6: The Monster

I have to admit, I’m not so much writing “reviews” now as I am just trying to give you overviews of things that aren’t spoiler-worthy before I get to the spoilers I really want to talk about. It’s hard to unravel this series easily, without revealing too much; hence the reason why I’ve broken it into these eight parts.

By now, you’ve attached yourselves to a particular character or two, and you’re rooting for them every time they are on the screen.

I will try to allude to things still without outright naming them, so if you’re reading these as you watch, you can do the pre-read, watch, spoiler-filled as a whole.

I’m glad the quarry foreshadowing has come full circle.

The comment about which parent knocks is very telling for a few reasons, and I’m delighted to see it is how it is for at least the “knocking mama”. Her trust level of her child is reaffirmed in this scene, even unspoken, it is shown again. This is delightful to see, because it’s so crucial we believe that relationship is true and exists between child and parent. Kudos to the knocking mama. I think the other barge-right-in-if-it’s-unlocked mama is showing their true colours as well, because she has never fully trusted herself enough to be real. I think she’s fake and phony, and tries desperately to have the kind of relationship “knocking mama” has so easily with her child. ((purposely trying to be vague so it doesn’t ruin the moment of “OOOH I SEE THAT!” for you as well. Maybe people don’t watch things the way I do.

Have you noticed, through most of this, that the parents are absent? Even the “stay at homers” are out all the time. Couldn’t decide if it felt more like an episode of Max & Ruby, Goonies, or Stand By Me. Maybe it was intentional from The Duffer Brothers; maybe they were latch-key kids themselves. But no one locks their doors (a truth in most small towns. Side note: I actually know, well knew rather, houses on my paper routes for example, which did not have locks on their doors at all, but rather just regular doorknobs. Mr. Brown’s house – which didn’t have any running water in it, nor a inside toilet – across from where I caught the bus for school from grade 3-8 – had rusted hook latches only. Mr. Tuttle’s house [that man would always buy a case of my chocolate bars, no matter what!] was four houses away from where I lived, and for over 8 months, he only had a tarp on the front door after a tree fell and broke his porch and door. Only reason he got a door was it was a pretty brutal winter and the tarps weren’t holding out the cold enough]. 7 houses away was a grouch old man who lived in a shack (legit, shack) that you had to move the corrugated tin roof piece that was the ‘door’. Trust me; I grew up in a small town.) – I totally lost my train of thought, but that was a nice wander down memory lane… thanks!

El is incredibly decent.

And wow, USA in the 80s. << I mean, I get it, I was allowed to buy the booze and smokes for my mom when I was 7 years old, so I guess .38s to teens in the USA must be still allowed in some places. I’m guessing a lot more than are nationally reported, that’s for sure. But the “Monster Hunting” line made me lol.

Spoilers:

*continuity issues first*

Really though, bullets to teens and no questions asked? WTF?? O.o

I love that 011 could be killing these kids, and instead, she’s being good and forcing them to run away. I seriously hope series 2 we see Troy and James avoiding everyone from a distance, or not in it at all. I can’t be that lucky though. More than likely, they are going to become Striker-to-Wolverine kinds of despicable adults, and pursue military careers in order to work for the Lab directly, in hopes of retaliating on the boys and 011.
Still disturbed about how glib that guy is about the damn bullets.

I hate when people are egged on for fights, and then the person doing the egging on acts all scandalised and victimised because they had no idea that their words would hurt so much. Get a grip, you worthless hairball of society, you knew exactly what you were doing.

And the whole bit about Nancy being a slut – really? I get that this shit happened back in the 80’s but just once, it would be nice to see the jock/popular guy not be a supreme body part and openly stop it before it happened.

How do they get up there in the first place to do it? If they are going to spray paint something, they can’t rightly do it in the middle of the day.

I mean, hell, the Regent theatre was on Main Street in my town. It’s across from the Post Office, and within view of the only restaurant (at the time) in town, and the corner store that had the last working malt shop… yeah, I’m doing it again, aren’t I? Sorry. My point was, you couldn’t do that in the daytime, because people in a small town have ONE theatre, and no one is going to let punks get away with defacing the only place in town that they bring their children.

The parents probably work close to this vandalism. So it had to happen at night, LATE. Which means that they had to bring a ladder… yes, I’m overthinking this part, but come on, the sign was spray painted up in the air, so they had to have had access to a ladder, the spray paint (which I’m guessing would be super easy to get, if bullets are), and then how do you write it at night so clearly? There’d be paint spray flecks everywhere. #plothole is weak. I am also sure that the cops wouldn’t have been called for a dust-up, if they hadn’t already been called for the vandalism, which whats-his-face-freckled-loser was still doing when Nancy came barging down the alleyway to confront them.

One last thing: NOPE, NOPE, NOPE. Just one time, would it be nice for the girl NOT to become a wilting freakin’ flower and say that the douchenozzle is really a decent guy. NO he’s not, you’ve been programmed by mainstream media to believe you’re not worth the same as him, so he can call the shots and treat… Yes, I’m moving on…

My heart breaks for 011. I just want to hug her.
